About the College: History, Vision and Jesuit Education
A short history
The college section began as part of St Joseph’s School, which started in 1888, and later grew into a separate degree college. The milestones from the college prospectus:
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1888 | St Joseph’s School begins its journey; the college section later grows out of it |
| 1927 | College section (basically the Intermediate course) affiliated to the University of Calcutta, with just four students |
| 1949 | Fully accredited to teach B.A. and B.Sc. courses |
| 1962 | University of North Bengal established; the college is later affiliated to it |
| 1963 | College moves out of the school premises to its present site |
Today the college is a separate institution from the school, with its own management trust, admissions, fees and staff.
Jesuit education and the college’s purpose
The college is run by the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1540 and active in education around the world. The vision is built around “forming men and women for others”.
“Rooted in the Ignatian Charism of forming men and women for others, St Joseph’s College, Darjeeling strives towards the fostering of academic excellence and the promotion of a humane society.” — College vision statement
The mission points in the prospectus include:
- Ensuring academic quality in higher education
- Access and equity for deserving, meritorious students, with a preference for the poor and marginalised, irrespective of caste and creed
- Critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving
- Pluricultural values and integration of all stakeholders on campus
- Leadership and social change
- Networking with other institutions and agencies
- Contributing to the nation in the spirit of Sursum Corda
The coat of arms
The crest, first designed by Fr. A. Neut, carries the Jesuit monogram IHS (the first letters of the name of Jesus in Greek capitals) in the red upper half, and white snow mountains in the blue lower half. A white diagonal bar carries the motto Sursum Corda, and the scroll below names the college and its location.
A message from the Principal
In the 2026-27 prospectus, Principal Fr. Dr. Donatus Kujur SJ talks about a “holistic educational experience”, the flexibility of NEP 2020 with multiple entry and exit points, a full-time counsellor, a placement cell and campus WiFi.

Two ways to study: Single Major + Minor, or Multidisciplinary
Under NEP 2020, the college offers two structures.
1. Single Major and Single Minor (SMSM) Choose one subject as your Major and a Minor from the remaining subjects. A subject taken as Major cannot also be taken as Minor, and choices depend on what the college offers.
2. Three Discipline Specific Courses (Multidisciplinary) Choose two Major subjects and one Minor. In B.A., subjects are grouped into combinations:
| B.A. Combination | Subjects |
|---|---|
| Combination A | Bengali / Hindi, English, Nepali, Economics |
| Combination B | Geography*, Mass Communication & Journalism*, Political Science |
| Combination C | History, Sociology |
For B.A., pick any two subjects from any two combinations as Major subjects and the third from another combination as Minor. B.Sc. follows a similar combination system, so check the printed prospectus for the exact B.Sc. groupings before you apply.
For B.Com. Multidisciplinary, the pairing is Accounting & Finance as Major with Business Management as Minor, or the reverse.
Exit options under the four-year structure
| After | You receive |
|---|---|
| 1 year (2 semesters) | UG Certificate (with the required courses and a 2-week internship) |
| 2 years (4 semesters) | UG Diploma (with an internship) |
| 3 years (6 semesters) | Bachelor’s Degree |
| 4 years (8 semesters) | Bachelor’s Degree with Honours (with a research project in the final semester) |
| 4 years (8 semesters) | Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) with Research |
Good to know: Older text on the college website still mentions “three-year Honours courses”. The 2026-27 prospectus describes the four-year undergraduate programme, so go by the prospectus for the current session.
M.A. English
The college website lists an M.A. in English at post-graduate level. It does not appear in the 2026-27 undergraduate fee sheet, so contact the college office for its fee and intake details.

St Joseph Darjeeling Admission 2026: Step-by-Step Process
St Joseph’s College processes admissions in stand-alone mode. As the prospectus puts it, admissions are not through the centralised admission portal, so you apply on the college’s own website.
Stage 1: Applying online
- Go to www.sjcdarjeeling.edu.in and fill in the application form as per the instructions.
- Pay the processing fee of ₹250 per application.

- You may apply for more than one stream or subject, but each needs a separate application form, fee and phone number.
Warning: Any wrong entry or manipulation in the application form (Class XII marks or category) can lead to cancellation of the form and the admission. The college is not responsible for unsuccessful document uploads.
Stage 2: Merit list, admission call and fee payment (2026 notice)
The college’s admission procedure notice dated 9 June 2026 sets out twelve steps:
| Step | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Provisional Merit List: all eligible students who finalised their application, ranked by merit points from 10+2 marks | Admission portal |

The prospectus adds that, depending on seat availability, a second or third list may be published. Lists appear on the college website and notice board.
Planning for a later year? The dates above belong to the 2026 session. Treat the sequence as a likely pattern, but confirm current dates, fees and documents on the college website and notice board.
Important admission rules
- Pay on time. If fees are not paid by the stipulated dates, your candidature is cancelled and waiting-list candidates are called.
- A name on the merit list does not guarantee admission in the applied course.
- Early absence: a first-semester student absent for more than the first 15 days continuously without intimation has the admission cancelled.
- Discrepancies: a discrepancy found during document verification or university registration leads to cancellation and forfeiture of all fees.
- Reservation: seats are reserved for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/differently-abled candidates as per Government rules (minimum 40% disability for differently-abled candidates). You cannot claim SC/ST/OBC-A/B or PWD status unless the certificate is submitted.
- Completion limits: a three-year UG programme must be completed within five years of admission, and a four-year programme within seven years.
Eligibility Criteria
General eligibility
- You must have passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination of WBCHSE or an examination the university recognises as equivalent.
- You must have passed at least four subjects with English as a compulsory subject.
- Admission is on merit and availability of seats.
- For rounding, 59.5% counts as 60%, 54.5% as 55% and 49.5% as 50%.
- SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/PWD candidates follow the minimum marks set by the State Government.
Single Major and Single Minor
A candidate is eligible with either:
- 55% in aggregate, or
- 50% in aggregate with 60% in the subject or related subject chosen as Major.
Candidates from a Vocational Board are not eligible for Single Major and Single Minor courses.
Three Discipline Specific (Multidisciplinary) courses
This route is meant for candidates with below 55% in aggregate, though students scoring above 55% may also apply. Candidates from a Vocational Education Board can take the B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. Multidisciplinary course only, with the option to study up to the end of the 6th semester.

Tip: The prospectus says course criteria and admission follow North Bengal University norms. Double-check your exact subject combination with the college office before applying.
Session gap: the sources differ
- The 2026-27 prospectus says there should be no more than 3 years between the year of the Higher Secondary examination and the year of admission.
- The college website’s admission page says no more than 5 years, and that the qualifying examination should have been passed in 2021 or later.
If you are close to the limit, call the admission office and get the current rule confirmed.
Merit List 2026 and How Merit Is Calculated
The St Joseph Darjeeling merit list 2026 is generated on the college’s admission portal from the 10+2 marks you enter in the application form, as per university norms. The prospectus gives these formulas:
| Course type | Merit calculation |
|---|---|
| Single Major + Minor (subject studied at +2 level) | (Marks in Major / related subject + Marks in English + Best marks in two other subjects) ÷ 4 |
| Single Major + Minor (subject not studied at +2 level) | (Marks in English + Best marks in three other subjects) ÷ 4 |
| Multidisciplinary (three discipline specific) | (Marks in English + Marks in 3 Core / related subjects) ÷ 4 |
How to check the merit list
- Log in to the admission portal using your student login or admission call list login.
- Check the Provisional Merit List for your merit point and position.
- Check the Provisional Admission Call to see whether you have been called.
- If called, click Apply and pay the admission fee online within the specified time.
Lists are also displayed on the college website and notice board, so check both regularly.
St Joseph Darjeeling Fees 2026-27
Here is the fee structure for the 2026-27 session from the college fee sheet, in Indian rupees (₹).
Read this first: The sheet shows the total fee in a year (the first-year figure), the amount payable at admission, and then semester-wise amounts. Odd semesters (3, 5, 7) cost more than even semesters (2, 4, 6, 8). The last two columns (“per year from year 2” and “estimated four-year total”) are our own arithmetic from the sheet, assuming no revision. The management may revise fees and will display any change on the notice board and website.

| Microbiology Major | 43,950 | 24,100 | 19,850 | 22,350 | 19,850 | 42,200 | 170,550 |
What these numbers tell you
- The lowest first-year fee is the aided B.A. Multidisciplinary at ₹18,050, followed closely by B.Com. Multidisciplinary and B.A. Major.
- Adding a self-financed minor (Mass Communication, Geography, Computer Science or Microbiology) raises the yearly fee by roughly ₹6,000.
- Self-financed majors cost ₹43,950 in the first year.
- The admission-time payment is higher than a later odd-semester payment, which suggests it includes one-time charges. The sheet does not itemise them, so ask the office if you need a breakdown.
Fee refund policy (please read)
The college notes that many students selected in the first merit list take admission and later move elsewhere, which deprives other deserving candidates of a seat. So if you leave after securing admission and join another institution, the admission and course fees will not be refunded under any circumstances for the 2026-27 session. Apply only if you intend to join.
Hostels and St Joseph Darjeeling Hostel Fees
The college has two hostels, both open to all students of the college:
- Xavier Hostel for boys
- Fairview Hostel for girls
The prospectus describes them as a “home away from home” for students from different backgrounds and cultures.
Hostel fees 2026-27
| Hostel | Total fee in a year | At admission | From 2nd month (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xavier Hostel (Boys) | ₹79,600 | ₹17,600 | ₹6,200 |
| Fairview Hostel (Girls) | ₹78,350 | ₹18,350 | ₹6,000 |
The numbers work out to the admission payment plus ten monthly payments: 17,600 + (10 × 6,200) = 79,600 for Xavier, and 18,350 + (10 × 6,000) = 78,350 for Fairview. Hostel fees are separate from college fees.
Sample first-year budgets (college fee + hostel fee)
| Example | College (first year) | Hostel (year) | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.A. Major + Xavier Hostel | ₹18,550 | ₹79,600 | ₹98,150 |
| B.Sc. Major + Fairview Hostel | ₹21,050 | ₹78,350 | ₹99,400 |
| BBA + Xavier Hostel | ₹43,950 | ₹79,600 | ₹123,550 |
These exclude uniform, books, travel and personal expenses.

Looking for St Joseph’s School monthly fees?
This article does not cover the school’s fees. Third-party listings (UniApply) show an indicative monthly fee of roughly ₹6,800 to ₹9,000 for Classes 3 to 10, but these are estimates, not official figures. Fees, boarding charges and entry classes change every year, so ask the school office directly.
Looking for the St Joseph’s School movie shooting?
We could not find a reliable source confirming a film shot at either St Joseph’s School or St Joseph’s College. Two well-known Darjeeling school locations are often mixed up with them: Main Hoon Na (2004) was reported to be shot largely at St Paul’s School, Darjeeling, and DailyO reports that a large part of Parineeta (2005) was filmed there as well. Some visitor reviews of the North Point school mention Barfi! (2012), but that is not backed by an official or production source, so treat it as unverified. If you have a verified film credit, share it and we will update this post.
