About Shrubbery Nightingale Park

The park is about a ten-minute walk from the Mall (Chowrasta), one of Darjeeling’s busiest tourist areas. It has pine trees on one side and views of snow-covered peaks including Kanchenjunga on the other, crisscrossing walkways, and a statue of Lord Shiva. According to local accounts, the grounds were once the private courtyard of a British-era bungalow. A major earthquake in 1934 destroyed it, after which it was redeveloped and reopened to the public.

Nearby: Observatory Hill

Observatory Hill rises beside Chowrasta, at about 2,134 m, and is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. A temple of Mahakal, a form of Shiva, with a cave sacred to worshippers stands at the top, surrounded by bells and fluttering prayer flags. Views of Kanchenjunga and other snow peaks are clearest from October to November, while clouds often hide the mountains at other times of year.
