Brief History of St Alphonsus School Kurseong

In the year 1891, St. Alphonsus School was founded by Fr. Celeste Motet SJ. Initially established as a primary school within St. John's Parish, St. Mary's Hill, it later transitioned into a secondary school under the visionary leadership of Fr. Wery. 

St Alphonsus School Kurseong   subsequently relocated to its present site, with Fr. Wery dedicating himself exclusively to his role as the Headmaster after relinquishing his responsibilities as the Parish Priest. 

Under his guidance, St. Alphonsus School flourished and evolved, eventually incorporating the St. Alphonsus Industrial School as part of its educational offerings



St Alphonsus School Kurseong

The old school building originally known as 'Kurseong Hotel' (allegedly one of the most hunted house in the region at the time) became St Alphonsus School (SAS). 

Rev Fr Michael Wery SJ was the main person behind the creation of the original secondary school which also helped the students from under privileged background until his death in 1957.

The hotel in which St Alphonsus School was started was also known as Grand Hotel/Clarendon Hotel (in its 100 years history before SAS took over the hotel changed it's name and function many times). 

 On way to the school just near the present day Kurseong Tourist Lodge - the building's name was PELICAN - there used to be a big signboard highlighting the name of the hotel. Besides Fr Wery's, the contribution of Fr Mackey in rapid progress of the school cannot be forgotten.

He was unceremoniously shifted to Bhutan most probably in 57/58. Fr Namchu, Fr Pendracast also officiated as head master in between and Fr Abraham took reins in the middle of 1959 .

 
Fr John Murray Abraham SJ in 1959 took over over the school as the Headmaster. He then realized that the school was so bad, the walls were falling apart and it was not safe for the students to continue; now he had to either close it or rebuild a complete new complex. Undaunted, he immediately rallied his friends and families from Canada to provide financial support, took some bank loan.

 
Fr John Murray Abraham SJ also made 'rock carrying' and 'hollow block' making etc part of the school curriculum for both teachers and students. He then ran poultry business on the roof top of this new school building to cover the fund for students who were from poor family background. Then came countless of famous Headmasters, teachers and other members of the school staff who made St Alphonsus School such an outstanding institute!

St Alphonsus School added Plus 2 in 1996 and same year for the first the first time in its history girls were given admission in Science stream except for 1 girl who was allowed to join in Arts. 2017 saw the celebrating 125th Anniversary of formation of St Alphonsus School, the celebrations continued throughout the year and was celebrated across many places.
