Over the last few years, cancer cases in the Darjeeling area have been increasing at an alarming rate. This is a pressing issue that warrants immediate attention. The concerned health authorities must thoroughly investigate the potential causes and, if possible, establish a dedicated research group to delve deeper into this serious matter.
Cancer is a disease that can be effectively treated only if detected early. This disease places an enormous burden on patients and their families, draining them physically, emotionally, and, financially. Early detection remains the most viable path to improving outcomes and saving lives.
Although there is no singular cause for cancer, several risk factors significantly contribute to its occurrence. These include excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, exposure to harmful radiation, and other environmental and lifestyle factors. Understanding these risks and mitigating them through public awareness campaigns and preventive measures should be a priority.
The health department of our region must recognize the gravity of the situation and take proactive steps to address it. This includes launching awareness programs, improving access to early diagnostic facilities, and promoting research efforts to uncover region-specific factors contributing to the rise in cancer cases.
The Government of India has introduced robust policies, strategic interventions, and financial assistance schemes to enhance prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient care nationwide.; The Union Budget 2025-26 underscores the Government of India's dedication to enhancing cancer care through several key initiatives:
1. Day Care Cancer Centres:
The government plans to establish Day Care Cancer Centres in all district hospitals including Darjeeling over the next three years, with 200 centres slated for 2025-26.
2. To alleviate treatment costs, 36 lifesaving drugs and medicines for treating cancer, rare diseases and chronic diseases fully exempted from Basic Customs Duty (BCD).
3. Furthermore, specified drugs and medicines under Patient Assistance Programmes run by pharmaceutical companies fully exempted from BCD.
Since our region is weak financially and also from the infrastructure point of view, our concerned health department and those occupying highest chairs must ensure that we get benefitted from these initiatives of the government. Together, we should work towards reducing the prevalence of cancer in Darjeeling and safeguarding the health of our people.
LET US BEAT CANCER BEFORE IT BEATS US.
