The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), fondly known as the Darjeeling Zoo, has unveiled an exciting new attraction for wildlife enthusiasts—two majestic white tigers. This special addition, now on public display, has already captured the imagination of visitors.
The white tigers, a male named Akash (aged 4) and a female named Nagmani (aged 7), arrived in late November as part of an exchange program with the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. In return, the Hyderabad zoo received a pair of tigers and some pheasants from PNHZP. Initially kept in quarantine, these striking felines were recently introduced to the public.
“The tigers, brought from Hyderabad, were kept in quarantine and have now been placed on display for visitors,” said PNHZP director Basaveaj Hoelyachi. “With the existing two Siberian tigers, which were brought in an exchange program last year, these white tigers will be an added attraction.”
Known for their distinctive white fur, a result of a lack of the pigment pheomelanin, white Bengal tigers are larger and heavier than their orange counterparts. Male white tigers can grow up to 3 meters in length and weigh between 200 to 250 kilograms, making them a fascinating sight for animal lovers.
The zoo’s tiger family has become increasingly diverse, now featuring a Royal Bengal tiger, two Siberian tigers (Akamas and Lara, brought from Cyprus Zoo last year), and the newly arrived white tigers. Tourists are thrilled by the new additions, with one visitor, Turmi Sarkar from Kolkata, calling the white tigers a "Christmas gift" and expressing delight at the rare opportunity to see them.
With the arrival of Akash and Nagmani and the anticipation of more red pandas, PNHZP continues to enchant its visitors while playing a crucial role in wildlife preservation.
