An old wooden bridge at Bijanbari broke down beacause of heavy load.around 300 people were passing through the bridge to attain a cultural program that was been organised by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha accross the bridge. 41 people died and 196 are severly injured.The victims were taken to Bijanbari Rural Hospital and few were taken to District Hospital Darjeeling.Few people are still missing.
Police and local people are still searching for the missing victims.There are more chances of death increase.Most of the dead bodies are of small children and females.
Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee will visit the site of accident along with Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi and Union Minister of State Mr Sudip Bandhopadhyay for medical assistance.
