Guras [ Scientific Name : Rhododendron ]


The scientific name of Guras is Rhododendron,[Guras-local name in Nepali Language ].These flowers are mostly found in cold regions. Guras is the National flower of Nepal,the flower is traditionally emphasized .

It grows up to to the height of 10 to 100 centimetres approximately. There are different colours of Guras.Guras is a Evergreen plant.[It may also be deciduous].

Its leaf are 1-2 cm in size.The climatic condition of Darjeeling is favorable for Guras hence so many beautiful varieties are available around the region.Its grown commercially in few areas for sell.


Guras has some medicinal importance as anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective function against few diseases.It has been found that the flower is helpful for maintaining few functionality of kidney and few other diseases.

Rhododendron arboreum (Lali Gurans):


 This is the national flower of Nepal and is commonly found in the hilly areas of Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Nepal. It features clusters of bright red or pink flowers that bloom during the spring months, adding a splash of color to the hillsides.

Rhododendron niveum (Seto Gurans): 


Also known as the "White Rhododendron," this species produces white or pale pink flowers. It is often found at higher elevations and contributes to the breath-taking alpine scenery.

Rhododendron campanulatum: 


With its bell-shaped flowers, this rhododendron species displays a range of colors, including pink, purple, and occasionally white. It thrives at altitudes of 2,400 to 4,300 meters and is a sight to behold during the flowering season.

Rhododendron hodgsonii: 


Known for its attractive tubular flowers, Rhododendron hodgsonii presents a mix of colors, including pale pink and white. It is found at varying elevations and is favored by many for its delicate charm.

Rhododendron fulgens (Koirala Gurans): 


This species boasts vibrant scarlet-red flowers that create a striking contrast against the green landscape. It is one of the most eye-catching rhododendron varieties found in the region.

Rhododendron thomsonii: 


With its pendulous, trumpet-shaped flowers, Rhododendron thomsonii offers shades of pink and purple. This species thrives at higher altitudes and is a testament to the diversity of rhododendron species in the area.

Rhododendron ponticum: 


Although originally from Europe, Rhododendron ponticum has naturalized in some parts of the region. It showcases purplish-pink flowers and can be found in certain areas of Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Nepal.

Rhododendron dalhousiae: 


This species features bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers with delicate pink or red markings. It is a delightful addition to the region's floral tapestry.

Rhododendron falconeri: 


Known for its distinctive foliage and large, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers, Rhododendron falconeri adds a unique charm to the hilly landscapes.

Rhododendron lepidotum: 


This species displays small, fragrant, white to pinkish flowers and is often found at higher elevations, contributing to the ethereal beauty of the alpine zones.
