Darjeeling, a popular tourist destination, is set to implement a new 'tourist tax' of Rs 20 per day on visitors aged five and above. The collection of this tax will be managed through a tender process, with an outsourcing agency responsible for overseeing the entire operation.
As part of the process, the agency will recruit collectors, each equipped with a uniform and an identity card to streamline the tax collection process. While specific dates for the commencement of tax collection are not provided, it is expected to start very soon.
Interestingly, this marks the fourth occasion that the Darjeeling municipality has attempted to impose a tourist tax. The previous attempts occurred in 2008, with subsequent taxes of Rs 3 per head per day in 2011 and Rs 10 per head per day in 2012. However, each time, the initiative lost momentum and faded away a few months after its initiation.
It's worth noting that visitors staying with friends or relatives may potentially be exempt from this newly imposed tax, adding a layer of flexibility to the system. As Darjeeling gears up for the implementation of this tourist tax, the effectiveness and longevity of this initiative remain to be seen.
