Brief History of Central School For Tibetans

 The Central School for Tibetans Kalimpong was established on July 17, 1964 formerly known as Tibetan Refugee School.The School was the 4th Tibetan residential schools to be set up after the flight of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans in 1959.



During initial startup of the school the than principal  Mr.T. Lhawan of Darjeeling held charges of Kalimpong and Darjeeling .

 The School was the largest residential school having students around 800 . By 1970 winter many of the Tibetan children were shifted to Tibetan Schools in Mussoories, Shimla and Darjeeling closer to their parents and relatives.

The Central School for Tibetans Kalimpong functioned as a Middle school with a small hostel strength run by a Lama Teacher from 1971- 1976.

In 1977 it was upgraded to the Secondary level and in 1988 further upgraded to the Senior Secondary level.

The Tibetan School and the Govt. College were housed for many years in the same building Jagdamba Building also known as White Wool store at Topkhana, Kalimpong.

In 1996, CTSA took over the hostel until then managed by the Department of Education, CTA, Dharamsala. In the same year, the Govt. of India acquired the school building and premises covering roughly 4 acres of land for the specific purpose of our school.

Historically, Topkhana got its name after 1905 when Col. Young husband camped with his troops and ‘’tops’’-canyons on his way Tibet. The building was one of the largest store during the days of Tibetan trade through Kalimpong.


Additional Information

The school is in the Jagdamba Building which is an old wool godown with three storeys. Inside this building are over 30 class rooms and laboratories with latest teaching aids and a Computer lab. On various subjects the specious school library has over 10, 000 books.


The school also has another three storied building in the north which is the staff quarters. Under constructor are another nine staff quarters in the same area.

 The school has a total of a little over 4 acres of land with a boundary all ground.

School Amenities :


  • The school auditorium also serves as the dining hall on regular days.
  • The school has a standard basketball court, volleyball court and a badminton court.
  •  There are facilities for table-tennis and Kho-Kho besides a small football ground.
  • Indoor games like table tennis, caroms and chess are also provided both in the hostels and during school time.
  • There is a dress designing – tailoring section for girls of class VIII and below while boys take up wood craft, painting.

All maintenance work with the school is carried out by the boys and girls. The Tibetan Music and Dance section remains active all through the year.
